Django Unchained Review
Django Unchained is a pretty crazy movie, so crazy it should perhaps be called Tarantino Unchained instead. This movie reeks of total control by director Quentin Tarantino, but in a good way. This movie may be crazy, but it is crazy good.
Django Unchained follows the story of Django, a freed slave who is working as a bounty hunter with Dr. King Schultz, a german dentist. Taking place in the 1800s, this pair is as unlikely as it gets. Schultz decides to help Django save his wife, Broomhilda, who is still enslaved on the plantation of the infamous Calvin Candie.
The plot of the movie is somewhat ridiculous, and some of the scenes are downright inaccurate to the period, but besides these inexplicable “Tarantino-isms”, it seems as if the movie was made to be generally historically accurate.
This movie is a western through and through, complete with standoffs, six-shooters, and lots of time on the frontier. Tarantino’s unique twist on the genre comes with the hero, Django, being a black man. Simply riding into town on a horse turns the heads of everyone; they have never seen a black man riding a horse before.
While I can’t peg this movie as one single genre, it could easily be a comedy. Django Unchained is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, funnier than any traditional comedies. The acting is what really sells the comedy, starting with the main characters. Christoph Waltz, who plays Dr. Schultz, steals the show in this movie, with his spectacular understated humor and demeanor. Jamie Foxx, who plays Django, is also quite understated, but delivers some fantastic one-liners. Samuel L. Jackson, playing Stephen, Candie’s assistant, is the opposite of understated. His ridiculous whining the whole movie is almost funnier than Waltz’s Dr. Schultz. Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio is not necessarily very funny, but is very well played.
Django Unchained is a very brutal movie, with some very bloody action scenes that are more comical than disturbing. At the same time, there are several points in the movie that are downright uncomfortable to watch, but these points serve to illustrate the horrors of slavery quite effectively.
There is one small flaw in this film, and it is really, really minor. The end of the movie, while great, seems to drag a bit at points. It seems like some scenes are just added for effect, and it does not flow quite as well as the rest of the movie. But again, this is a really minor gripe, and really does not change my opinion of the movie.
Django Unchained is a great movie, with hilarious dialogue and great action scenes. For anyone who loves Tarantino movies or wants a refreshing change of pace from stock comedies or action movies, watch this movie.
