Does No One Remember These Super Smash Clones?

Early this morning, G4TV unveiled PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. A character mash up game very much in the same likeness of Super Smash Bros. from Nintendo. It took no time at all for people to start raving against the game calling it a blatant rip-off and that Sony should be ashamed. Thing is, All-Stars isn’t the first game to utilize the Super Smash formula nor its play style. When it comes down to brass taxes, throwing a bunch of fan favorite characters in an arena and giving the gamers control over them is just something that works and is highly wanted. Nintendo’s Smash Bros. was a huge deal back on the Nintendo 64 that blew up into a phenomenon. Where else were you going to find Link fighting against Pikachu or Browser taking on Captain Falcon? Nintendo franchises and characters aren’t the only established crew in the world of entertainment. Plenty of people took to forums and sites to come up with their favorite rosters of PlayStation characters, Xbox characters, TV personas, cartoons, anime, and the list goes on. What some of you may not know or remember is that some of those mediums have Super Smash-like games already.

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion

If you grew up in the 90′s and even somewhat into the early 2000′s you’ll remember the smash hits that Cartoon Network had airing. You had classic cartoon such as Courage the Cowardly Dog, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab, 2 Stupid Dogs, Secret Squirrel, and so much more. Take all the characters from that era in Cartoon Network’s history and some of the modern ones like Ben 10 and throw them in an arena. That was Punch Time Explosion. This game had a story mode and plenty of character colors and costumes to keep fans interested.

Battle Stadium D.O.N.

Featuring characters from DragonBall Z, Naruto, and One Piece this game from Bandai saw players tackle mission-based battles and multiplayer for up to four people. The roster wasn’t very defined and limited to only three shows but they hit up some of the best characters from those series. There was plenty to unlock and the missions got pretty difficult. This is just the beginning of the titles on this list that unfortunately did not make it overseas.

Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

Capcom’s Viewtiful Joe series was just pure fun. The story may have been stupid but that was the point. The art style and near chibi-like characters were fun and interesting. Red Hot Rumble took the cast of the series and some outside inclusions like Dante and gave us a beat ‘em up that resembled Power Stone and Super Smash. I had a blast with this game ticking off my friends as I spammed Devil Trigger with Dante. The roster was around 13 strong but each had costumes and other unlockables.

DreamMix TV World Fighters

Sadly, this is another Japan-only game. This game featured some characters that gamers would die for over here in the States (or even Europe!). This was very Smash Bros. centered but featured characters like Solid Snake, Simon Belmont, Optimus Prime, and Megatron. Hudson Soft has a slice of the roster with their quirky characters but Konami and Takara took center stage here. Still, the roster wasn’t that big and battles got boring soon after unlocking everything and seeing the same people all the time. Once you got your fill of Prime and the other heavy hitters, TV World Fighters just became another shelf sitter.

Jump Superstars and Ultimate Stars

Take 27 characters from hit series found in Jump! magazine, put them in Super Smash fighting conditions and you have this game. It was absolutely awesome! Total shame it never hit outside of Japan but I did import it way back when for the DS. I couldn’t pass up the chance to play as Kenshin or Don Patch. Gameplay was very similar to Super Smash but you’d have manga-style slides on the touch screen which when pressed would activate a character to come in and either help you fight, support you, or defend. Ultimate Stars brought the roster up to 305 character with over 50 of them playable and the rest featured as slide summons.

So as we all can see, Sony isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before. If anything, All-Stars is the best representation outside of Super Smash for this character mash-up arena fighting genre. Gamers just want to see their favorite characters in these scenarios. Remember how many different characters would be brought up for inclusion in Super Smash games. Most of them would never be found on the roster. These games allow for many fan favorites to be played and battled against others who could never be in Super Smash Bros. I, for one, am glad that Sony is doing this. I wrote an earlier piece about how a Microsoft vs. Sony fighting game would and it was damn near one-sided if you looked at who Sony would be fielding. All-Stars Battle Royale should be one giant joy ride once it comes out this holiday. We’ll look forward to more character reveals and possible hands-on at E3 2012. I’ll make sure to shuffle Jason over to the Sony booth! To end this article, I’ll include a look at PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Enjoy!

"Does No One Remember These Super Smash Clones?" No. That's the point, if they'd been high profile releases then people (or at least a lot more people as I'm sure some have) would be complaining about them ripping off Super Smash Brothers as well. I had never heard of any of them personally.

Yes but the point is all these developers gave Nintendo Props for the inspiration, while Sony doesn't..

What about the TMNT game that actually had members of the smash dev team working on it? If you're going to get into game journalism, do your fucking homework.

It's not exactly the same as Smash Bro.s, but I'd include Power Stone in there as well.

who cares sure it looks exactly like smash bros. with PS characters... thing still looks fun as hell.

How can you sue a company for having a similar genre of games? Should Activision sue everyone for having the same style of gameplay as COD?  Fifa (EA) Sue Pro Evo Soccer (Konami). Seriously Stop being an idiot, I don't get when internet posters got so Stupid...I just assume everyone on the internet is a 8 yr old. It makes their comments make a lot more sense. Have a good one.

I hope Nintendo sues the SH*T out of Sony for this. This is just a blatant ripped off copy with no originality whatsoever (THE Sony way this gen). The title is crap as well. Should have just called it PS Title Fight, even this just reeks of Nintendo copying. Sony apologists that accept this are just pathetic AND THEY KNOW IT!

Can't wait to play this.  Smash Brothers is a blast, and I can see that Sony's going to bring some interesting variation to the genre.  On the subject of Sony-only characters, how about ol' Tomba?

what about that game on PS2 that has dragonball , naruto and one piece in the same game

I think the ignorance of some fans have come in the way from a great argument. First your comment Crozyndul is out of line. No clone of Smash will ever be on par or better but that doesn't stop it from being a good game. Gerzzo that was just completely wrong to say and Raixiel has valid points I actually argee. I'm a Nintendo fan but I do understand both arguments. I can see why were angry being that Sony and other media has picked on Nintendo for far too long and praise Sony when they rip off their ideas and call it their own. This SSB clone which there have been many seems like it will be fun and I can't wait to try this one out. It looks like fun actually and seems like it can be good. I think both sides should understand each other but overall can't wait to try it out. Game looks fun and on a side note maybe Sony and the media should stop acting the way they do.

hmm doesn't look bad, its a copy of smash bros but it looks pretty good, i don't know why people are complaining about the clone game style, but is OK i don't wanna get involve in that types of fights, but I'm gonna give a chance to Sony lets see if this game is worth to compete against Smash Bros

Stupid article is stupid. Nintendo is competing against Sony with not just software but hardware. The devs of those games do not produce consoles, you can't compare their clones with Sony's.

kingofe3

Thing is those games were also available on Nintendo consoles and were made by third party studios so no one was really bothered with Smash Bros clone style. The people who are making this are a first-party studio which means this is a direct copy from Sony themselves. I'm not here to question if the game will be good or not, I can't decide that. But, it is pitful that Sony is doing this.

The King of Fighters by SNK Fighters' Megamix by Sega Marvel vs Capcom by Capcom its all been done before but when Nintendo did it its like they invented the crossover fighting genre like Apple invented the touchscreen and smart phone and tablets Blind fanboyism is disgusting

Frenchiethefry94

what about tmnt smash up or rag doll kung fu. anyway playstation all-stars battle royal is going to freaking rock. and I don't understand why people keep comparing this to ssb. I mean sure its very similar but so is cod to battlefield. or gears to uncharted. theyre very similar but that doesnt mean that they cant coexist. they are all still their own games.

Gerzzo
Gerzzo

What a waste of development money. Why not create a team to develop a new IP with original gameplay instead of blatantly ripping off someone else's work and call it their own? I won't be buying this game at all, i would rather spend my money on the product of a team that respects their own identity.

Croxyndul
Croxyndul

haha I think people are pissed because it just might be up to par with ssbb and they don't want that. I mean of all the smash style games out there this one looks to be the best, along with the smash bros games of course.

Going by what you say Guest#1. Your a blatant rip off of your mother and should be sued

Did you not read the article??? Did you not see the OTHER examples given???  Even though plenty of other games have used a similar formula before and after SSB, it only matters when Sony does it right? Bitter much? Sony is NOT the only one doing it. And Nintendo wasn't the first to do a mash up fighting game. Should ID Software be the only ones allowed to make FPS games? Is every FPS game a rip off from Wolfenstein? Should Capcom be the only ones allowed to make 2D fighters? Since, going by your illogical fanboy mentality KoF(Final Fight) is a blatant rip off from Street Fighter 2 and they should be sued again. There is nothing for Nintendo to sue about. This has original characters, stages, moves, animations, rules and mechanics.Wake up!

Whaaa! Cry a bit more. Everyone copies everyone else in the industry - that's just the way it goes.  Think of it more as an homage.

Its not just about cross over that makes smash great its the Unique gameplay.

Uh what you dont undetstand just because those are crossover too doesn't mean they are in the same gameplay becaus they are not. In those games you named are there 4 players on screen can you get knock off is there stock live or damage percentage. Are there Items to be used. Does characters have multiple jump.

This gets me thinking.....why hasn't Bungie(creators Marathon) sued Id(Doom). Why hasn't Rockstar(GTA) sued Microsoft Studios(Crackdown). Or Sony(MLB The Show) sued 2K Studios(MLB 2K__)?  I hate people.

Every game takes something from another game.  There is NO MORE originality.

midgard229

Gayzzo. soo, then everyone would complain its a streetfighter rip off, or a tekken rip off. because there are only a few ways to do a fighting game. Party Fighter (smash bros, power stone etc) 2d (SF, Blazblue, etc) or 3d (tekken, Soul calibur etc) so eitherway you would be crying. Again, Your a rip off of your mother because your her child and have the similar DNA, Oh man you totally copied her......fail

When did they ever call it their own? Dumbass.  It uses the same format, but it has its own original characters and mechanics. No game released nowadays is completely original.  Are you blind? Did you not see the other games mentioned in the article?

Raixiel
Raixiel

As much as it seems like a wasted "ripped-off" effort, there are very few other ways that the game could be achieved otherwise. Even harder than making a workable fighting game that can successfully incorporate these characters, would be making it seem like you haven't ripped off any other fighting game in existence. Hard as it is to believe, Super Smash Bros 64 used elements from existing fighting games to create its end product. Shocker. You are perfectly entitled to your own opinion and what you do with your own money. However, refusing to buy a product simply because it takes existing concepts from previous titles and tries to make it its own does not make a whole lot of sense. We use this concept with every other kind of product, why can't we apply it to gaming? If Sony improves upon the formula, would you still hold issue with the game or accept it for improving on the idea? In technology and science we look forward to ideas being streamlined and improved upon. Gaming is one of the few technological mediums that argues with itself over the fact that 'because something came first' the the new product is obsolete and can never improve upon or surpass the original. :/

Hell, I hope it is up to par.  That opens up the potential for a future SSB x PAS title.  I doubt we'll see the companies have that kind of goodwill for each other, but hey; I can dream.

So just because other people are doing something wrong its alright for me to do it too? Ok, brb, going to rob a bank and shoot people.

 1. Playstation All-Stars is a ripoff because the developer that worked on the game (Superbot Entertainment) had a Wii in their studio. What's that mean? It means that they were playing Super Smash Bros. while making Playstation All-Stars. And Superbot Entertainment is a Playstation exclusive developer, so there's no reason why there should be a Wii in their studio of a Playstation-only developer. 2. Super Smash Bros. is this: A fighting game with multiple cross-overs that has up to 4 players jumping around, with movable, interactive stages, with items falling from the sky that you can use against enemies, with colored indicators on top of players saying P1, P4, etc., with grounds that you sink through, with characters you can snap out of flying after being hit into the air and it's a game that allows you to go wherever. It's not like SF2 where you have to be left or right side.

im not a sony fan and not even a Nintendo Fan ...but this game looks cool admit it yes it is a copy of Super Smash Bros but the copies have been done before, A Shrek game for GC, Battle Stadium Dome a Wierd Viewtiful Joe game, the new Ninja Turtles game the copies have been done before
