Before you get really excited, let me start off by saying that this is not the fabled remake. Instead, it seems like Square-Enix is updating Final Fantasy VII to release on Steam. A Google cache version of a dev site on the FinalFantasyVIIPC.com (which was registered on June 15th) tells us some features, price, and that in order to see any more info we need a dev account to log-in with. Well, that stinks.
Anywho, here are the features talked about on the cached site:
- Achievements: Whether you’re a seasoned FINAL FANTASY VII veteran or exploring this RPG classic for the very first time, show off your in-game accomplishments and put your gaming skills to the test with 36 brand new achievements to unlock. Share your profile with friends online to find out who is the ultimate FINAL FANTASY fan.
- Character Booster: Find yourself stuck on a difficult section or lacking the funds to buy that vital Phoenix Down? With the Character Booster you can increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure.
- Cloud Saves: Whether you’re away from home or simply using a different computer to play, enjoy FINAL FANTASY VII wherever you are. With cloud save support in FINAL FANTASY VII you can continue your game progress right where you left off, all you need is an internet connection.
- Price: £ 7.99 / € 9.99 (which is approximately $12.99)
It is interesting to see this happen. On one hand, the Ultimate Edition of Final Fantasy VII, which was PC-exclusive, is extremely rare to find and if this is just an updated version of that I’m excited. Fans have done a lot of work on mods and other cool things for the Ultimate Edition. If this allows more people to get their hands on editable code and mess around, I see no issue with this.
On the other hand, it is hard not to question Square-Enix and their hate for money. If this was Activision, we’d have seen a remake and a remaster of the remake already. A remake of Final Fantasy VII would sell by the boatloads. Everyone knows it. I understand their commitment to new titles but given how… well… Final Fantasy has sold recently, you would think they’d be all over this remake.
Still, it is nice to see a classic coming to more platforms and with new features. I will be buying VII for the fifth time if this actually comes out.
