The GOP Thinks You Are Immature

The GOP Thinks You Are Immature

Ok, maybe that’s going too far.  In all fairness, they aren’t talking about you in particular.  Just all gamers in general.

First reported by Politico, Maine state senator candidate Colleen Lachowicz, a Democrat, became the target of a direct-mailed attack by the state Republican party.  Lachowicz is attempting to unseat the incumbent, Sen. Tom Martin, and the GOP has responded in a bizarre way.  Check out the ad they have mailed to the citizens of Maine.

They have even started a website, Colleen’s World, to showcase some of her, ah, musings.  I can’t say I would vote for here, as some of it is rather, um, unprofessional.  The majority of it, however, is simple WoW jargon, which the website treats as terroristic threatening.  Apparently the Republicans have a problem with Colleen, or Santiaga I should say, d**kpunching Arthas.  Perhaps he’s a contributor?

I’m not going to pretend to understand regional politics or advanced campaign tactics, but I did take exception to one particular statement.     Maine GOP party spokesman David Sorenson had this to say concerning Lachowicz.  “Certainly the fact that she spends so much time on a video game says something about her work ethic and, again, her immaturity.”

Wait, what?  He did NOT just say that.  I play video games.  You’re reading this, so I can assume you probably play video games.  Millions of others, including doctors, lawyers and lawmakers  and plenty of other respectable people, also play video games.  I make no claims as to my maturity, but how dare he question my work ethic!  Hers, maybe.  Apparently she slacks off at work.  This banshee must be stopped.

Jokes aside, this is not cool.  Are moviegoers irresponsible?  Does reading a book count as “immature” behavior?  Why on Earth would playing a video game automatically make you unfit for office?  The answer is simple:  It wouldn’t.  It doesn’t.  I know I don’t need to defend my gaming habits, this is beyond ludicrous.  It’s offensive.  Some is definitely being irresponsible and immature here, but I doubt the GOP understands who it is.

“Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen’s fantasy world”, the GOP states.  Clearly, they understand neither.

Blake dislikes video games and writing, and he especially dislikes writing about video games.  As an Editor at Leviathyn, he does his best to make sure that everybody remembers the classics.  By that, we mean we’re pretty sure he hasn’t actually played a video game since 2001.  A stalwart fan of RPGs, Blake’s favorite game list reads like a brochure for the SNES.  When not gaming, writing and editing, Blake likes to annoy people with his guitar, drink more than is safe or healthy and kick a hacky sack around.  He is also a regular blogger at Game Informer, and would love it if you followed him on Twitter @blakeanglin.
