If recent indications are to be believed, communicating through your Xbox is about to get a whole lot better.
Citing a “person familiar with the matter”, CVG is reporting that the next Xbox will exclusively use Skype as its communication framework. It’s unclear how this may affect the “party” system, in-game chats or really anything else, but it’s hard to imagine a scenario where this doesn’t work out in a positive fashion.
There has been a lot of evidence this was coming. After Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, they shut down the MSN chat service and opened a dedicated Skype division. Interestingly, that same division recently posted a job offering for a UI designer stating “The team you’ll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox.” It sounds like they are building the new Xbox from the ground up with Skype in mind, so hopefully they can get it right out of the gate.
