Mew-Genics is the new game that the developers of Super Meat Boy have been working on for quite a while now, and today, some details have been announced that shed some light on what the game actually is. On Edmund McMillen’s personal site, he unveiled the basic structure of the gameplay and how players will be able to interact with it.
Mew-Genics appears to be akin to something like a “Nintencats” experience. Or as McMillen so eloquently puts it: “…Mew-Genics as a cross between The Sims and Pokemon with a sprinkling of Animal Crossing and a dash of Tamagotchi…”
It seems like you’ll be able to find cats placed throughout the world, and tend to them however you’d like in your own personal house. You can do certain activities with your cats like put them in cat pageants, or breed them to create your perfect cat armada. While no other activities have been outlined, I’m sure there are going to be a ton of things you’ll be able to do with the amount of cats they are promising to be in the world. Apparently the number of cats that are in Mew-Genics is 25418658283290000000000000, and it’s continuing to get bigger.
McMillen says that Mew-Genics has been the most complicated game he’s worked on by a long shot. He’s looking to create a world where players can have these unique stories that only occurred in their simulation. And although the gameplay may be on opposite sides of the spectrum from Super Meat Boy, you can probably expect that same kind of humor and ridiculousness in Mew-Genics.
Mew-Genics was originally conceived during a game jam that Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenese participated in for Ludum Dare 24. One of the themes for the game jam was “100 cats”, and they decided to take that and run with it. After working on it for several days in flash, they saw the glint of possibility in the game and chose to make it their next full game.
Although no concrete release date has been announced, they are aiming to release the game sometime in 2013 on Steam, iOS, and Android.
