Nintendo announced today that beloved classic RPG EarthBound will be making its first official appearance on American and European Virtual Consoles. While a release date has yet to be announced, we can expect to see it “by the end of this year”.
Where so many of the RPGs in the Super NES era focused on heavy fantasy themes, EarthBound was set in the modern day and featured a wide variety of unconventional enemies and weapons. Known as Mother 2 in Japan, EarthBound stars a young boy named Ness who has been tasked with defeating the evil alien Giygas in the present before he becomes an all-powerful entity in the future. While EarthBound is a distant sequel to Mother, it still borrows many of the same characters and ideas of the original and is widely considered a classic within the RPG fan community.
