Halo is definitely coming to the Xbox One, but it may not be called Halo 5.
Speaking to GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios vice president Phil Spencer said that the next installment in the franchise will most likely not be part of the Reclaimer trilogy as originally intended.
Spencer says, “While we originally said trilogy, we’ve actually expanded this to more of a saga, so we don’t want to limit the Reclaimer story within a trilogy.”
When 343 Industries took over the Halo series from Bungie, 343 planned to create the Reclaimer trilogy comprising of Halo 4, 5, and 6. But it appears that this “trilogy” is evolving into a “saga,” and the next Halo game may not bear a number at all.
The true nature of the next Halo game on Xbox One isn’t being clearly defined as of right now. ”It is the next Halo game that we are working on,” Spencer plainly states. ”We will talk more about actually the story arc in the game and how it plays out; we’ve got more time to talk about that.”
It also probably isn’t a side story like Halo 3: ODST or Halo Reach. Spencer states that the next generation Halo game is going to stand as a real entry in the series, and having 343 Industries producer Bonnie Ross come out on stage at Microsoft’s E3 2013 press conference is proof of that.
“…Having [producer Bonnie Ross] come out and announce the game, making sure people know it’s a legitimate version of Halo coming out, and when it’s coming out, and features that they’re focused on we thought was…important.”
Does this mean that Halo is rebooting like so many other franchises did? Is it going to drop the number and start off as just simply Halo? Plenty of other games have done this and had success, like Tomb Raider. Halo is coming to the Xbox One sometime in 2014.
