Although a steady decline in game sales has been taking place for some time now, it was the announcement regarding digital game sales the NPD released today that has piqued the curiosity of many in the gaming industry.
According to the research group, retail sales of physical game copies have gone down, but have been almost counterbalanced by a 27% increase in digital game sales over the last quarter.
This statistic helps to confirm the movement of the industry toward the possibility of an all-digital future where physical media is completely done away with and game copies are vended through online services such as the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam.
Of course, this is a concept that is still many years off, as connectivity issues within the United States and many other parts of the world still continue to limit people’s access to internet with ample speeds to download large files. Still, it’s an interesting prospect to consider, especially with the rapidly-approaching release of the next generation of consoles bearing down on us.
