I was born in 1994, and as such, my first gaming devices were a Nintendo 64 and a GameBoy Color. The first games I played included Super Mario 64, Mario Party, and Ocarina of Time. However, most of these games were too difficult for 6-year old me to beat, and I never considered Mario Party to be a game that you “finished.” While I did go back and finish Mario 64 and Ocarina several times later on in my life, the first game I ever beat was Pokemon Red Version. When I was a kid, the allure of Pokemon captivated me much like it did thousands of other people my age. Regardless of any difficult parts in the game, I stuck with it until the end. The huge amount of creatures that you could add to your team kept me enticed for a long time, and this was only elongated by my discovery of Pokemon Blue Version. Originally, I thought that Blue Version was a sequel to Red. However, it did not take me long to realize that it was virtually the same game, only with a few Pokemon that I had yet to see. This intrigued me to no end, and the next thing I knew, I had beaten both versions. The experience of playing through those games will always stick with me, and anytime I think about Pokemon I cannot help but think back to my first time completing those games.
One of the best things about gaming is that everyone starts at a different point. Some people were gaming when it was first invented, while many others will get into gaming with the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Wii U. Everyone has a different experience with gaming, and I would like to know yours. What was the first game that you beat? The first system you had? Was Pokemon the first for you as it was for me, or did you not get started until GameCube? I love learning about other people’s experiences with gamers, and I would love to open this up to the Leviathyn community. What was the first game that you beat, and what led you to beat it? What was the driving force in you finishing that game? Were there any hard parts that almost caused you to give up, or was the entire experience perfect? Was the first game that you beat one that you would play again today? In my experience, Pokemon Red and Blue are somewhat hard to go back to, but the release of FireRed and LeafGreen definitely eased that pain.
Take a break from your modern gaming and look back on the first game that you beat. Reminisce about your experience with the game and leave it in the comments – I would love to hear about it.
