Nintendo Offered Free Mother 3 Fan Translation

Nintendo Offered Free Mother 3 Fan Translation

The Mother 3 Fan Translation Team are offering Nintendo their English translation of the game for free, to encourage a quick American release.

Despite Mother 3 being available on the Game Boy Advance since April of 2006, the third and final installment of the Mother series has never been released outside of Japan. However, the ROM version of Mother 3 was patched with an English translation by a dedicated fan group called the Mother 3 Fan Translation Team. The Mother 3 Fan Translation Team have stated they will cease their downloadable English patch if Nintendo officially released the game in America, but with the announcement of Earthbound (Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back in Japan) finally being available again on the Wii U Virtual Console. The team are using this opportunity to get the cult classic RPG released in the U.S. Knowing that localizing a game from one region to another can take a lengthy amount of time, the Mother 3 Fan Translation Team are giving Nintendo their translated script for free, so Mother 3 can be released on the Virtual Console as soon as possible.

While the thought of an official video game company working with a group of fans seems unbelievable, it’s actually not that far-fetched. As mentioned on the Mother 3 Fan Translation Team blog, Xseed licensed a fan translated script of Ys: The Oath in Felghana, so they could quickly release the game overseas. Capcom also worked with a fan named Seow Zong Hui to create Megaman X Street Fighter, that celebrated the 25th anniversary of both series. And when Sega needed help porting Sonic CD to digital platforms, they turned to independent game designer Christian “Taxman” Whitehead and his fan-created Sonic engine. Plus, given that one of the members from the Mother 3 Fan Translation Team worked for Funimation and Babel Media, their translation skills are not to be taken lightly.

It’s unknown now if Nintendo will accept the Mother 3 Translation Team’s offer, but American fans can show their support for the series by purchasing Earthbound when it arrives on the Wii U Virtual Console.
