Star Trek The Video Game: Not Enough Technobabble to Fix PC Multiplayer

I’m not sure how it happened, but we now live in a world where we must accept that if a highly anticipated game launches there is a 90% chance that things will go wrong. Star Trek was released yesterday on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.  Based on the J.J. Abrams reboot, Star Trek  gives you the choice of viewing the story by playing as either the fabled Captain James T. Kirk or Commander Spock, as well as the ability to play with a friend using drop-in/drop-out multiplayer.  So it’s really a shame for PC users that the multiplayer doesn’t work.  Reports have been flooding the internet that for PC users the multiplayer is broken and that they’ve been unable to join any other  games.

So far it looks like both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation players are in the clear, and all other games on Steam seem to be working just fine; the only game that has a problem is Star Trek.  But that isn’t the end of the frustrations since, the AI for the character you’re not controlling doesn’t seem to be particularly bright.

The main problem is that when you play on the PC and try to join your friend’s game using the invite or the match making system, you just get a “game no longer available” message.  The other problem that players are having is that the official Twitter for Star Trek isn’t really acknowledging the issue.

Coupled with the reports of bugs, the lack of response or urgency by the developers isn’t helping their cause.  It wasn’t that long ago that we were have the same discussion about SimCity and it was only due to EA/Maxis’ quick acknowledgement that the anger died down.  The solution to the problem is simple for Star Trek: just fix it.  Admit that there is a major problem and that you’re working around the clock to get player back as soon as possible.  Luckily, a recent post on their Twitter does show that they are working with Steam to fix the problem, so with any luck the co-op will be up and running soon.
