Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection Coming to PS3, But Not Xbox 360

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the venerable Metal Gear Solid series, Konami has announced Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection will release June 2013.  This package includes nearly every single game from the Metal Gear Solid franchise.  The official list of games in this compilation is shown below.

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD Edition (also has the first two Metal Gear games on the MSX)
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition
  • Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Trophy Edition
That is a lot of Metal Gear.

That is a lot of Metal Gear.

The Legacy Collection will also have digital graphic novels created by Ashley Wood, but details on what these graphic novels are about have not been revealed.

Another interesting twist to the Legacy Collection is it will only be on the PS3 and not on the Xbox 360, even though Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection was released on both consoles.

Hideo Kojima has said on his official podcast that the reason the Legacy Collection isn’t on the 360 is simply due to size limitations that arises from the inclusion of Metal Gear Solid 4.  Kojima states, “The amount of data in MGS4 is just too enormous.”  Blu-ray discs that the PS3 uses are able to hold much more memory than the DVDs that the 360 uses.

Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection came out on both platforms, but it only had MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker.

Apparently, if MGS4 were to be released on the 360, it may need up to 7 discs.  Can you imagine swapping 7 discs throughout an entire game?  I’m sure if Kojima was forced to do that, he would come up with something clever to break the 4th wall during a disc change.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was announced earlier this year at GDC.  Along with MGS V: The Phantom Pain, MGS: Ground Zeroes will also be released to serve as a prologue to MGS V.
