Double Fine Announces New Puzzle-Adventure Hack ‘N Slash
Double Fine Productions have announced their new puzzle-adventure Hack ‘n Slash will arrive in the first half of 2014.
Hack ‘n Slash spawned from Amnesia Fortnight 2012 where twenty three game prototypes were created by developers over two weeks.
The event collaborated with Humble Bundle and allowed backers who paid a minimum of one dollar to vote for their favourite prototype. They’d also receive a copy of the winner once the full title was released.
Hack n’ Slash was the highest voted game, with Spacebase DF-9 coming in second and The White Birch third.
The main character, who is an obvious throwback to Link and Na’vi of The Legend of Zelda series, is a young elf who uses computer hacking skills to cheat through the adventure title.
Double Fine’s press release says that “by subverting old-school gaming tropes with unique hacking mechanics, Hack ‘n’ Slash allows non-programmer players to experience that same sense of mystery and discovery.”
The project’s lead Brandon Dillon has “always loved games with lots of secrets in them.”
When I first discovered a hex editor in an emulator, it dawned on me that I could be a kind of digital treasure hunter—no game could keep even its deepest secrets from me if I adventured long enough in its code and memory.
Hack ‘n’ Slash will be released for PC, Mac, and Linux on Steam.
