Minecraft Sells 12 Million Copies On Xbox 360

Mojang’s Minecraft continues to put up impressive sales figures on every platform it launches, with the 360 version of the game selling a little over 12 million copies to date. This commercial feat makes Minecraft one of the best selling Xbox 360 games of all time, despite only being released two years ago as an Arcade title. A disc-based version of the game was also released last year. If this keeps up, the game can eventually outsell the PC version, which is approaching 15 million sales as of writing.

Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan stated in a post on Xbox Wire that selling only one million copies would have more than fine for him. “I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1 million copies,” he said. “That would have put us on par with BF1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!”

Currently, Minecraft has had a number of collaborative DLC packs released, with the most recent being the Skyrim and Mass Effect mash-up packs. Kaplan promised that more DLC will be released in the future. “We’re looking forward to creating mashups with other games,” he said. “The Marvel collaboration is a great start and something we want to continue doing.”

Minecaft is currently available on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, PS3, iOS, and Android. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PS Vita versions of the game will be released sometime in the near future. Apparently, an Oculus Rift version of the game was also planned but was canceled by the game’s creator, “Notch” following the VR headset’s Facebook acquisition.
