In the video game industry’s jealous effort to establish our own version of the Oscars, Grammys, and Tonys of the world, The Game Awards 2014 pulled out all the stops. There was your mom’s favorite rock band, Imagine Dragons (with Koji Kondo), and even a special orchestral theme composed by Marty O’Donnell. That’ll show Bungie.
Games in 16 categories fought for superiority, chosen by a jury comprised of 28 international media members. I’ll get right to it. Here are the winners:
Game of the year: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Developer of the year: Nintendo
Best independent game: Shovel Knight
Best mobile/handheld game: Hearthstone
Best narrative: Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Best score/soundtrack: Destiny (I can’t believe this beat out Transistor.)
Best performance: Trey Parker in South Park: The Stick Of Truth
Games for change: Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Best remaster: Grand Theft Auto V
Best shooter: Far Cry 4
Best action/adventure: Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor
Best RPG: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Best fighter: Super Smash Bros. Wii-U
Best sports/racing: Mario Kart 8
Best online experience: Destiny
